Johannes Brahms: Love Song Waltzes

The Latvian Radio Choir and conductor Sigvards Kļava call the concert programme Love Song Waltzes a journey to find the perfect love. In a home concert atmosphere, the programme will feature Brahms’ harmonic choral melodies alongside Franz Schubert’s piano music for four hands, performed by Agnese Egliņa and Rihards Plešanovs.
“O how gently the stream winds through the meadow! O how lovely it is when Love finds Love!” dreams the poet Georg Friedrich Daumer in the lyrics of Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes. Brahms has brought these poems to life with impeccable sensitivity and elegance, portraying love that is touching, amusing, and sometimes bittersweet. To his publishers, Brahms called the Liebeslieder Waltzes “trifles”, yet even in these seemingly simple songs radiate Brahms’ emotional depth and captivating melodies.
Meanwhile, Franz Schubert’s Fantasia in F minor for piano four hands is a late work of the composer, and is widely considered a masterpiece of piano duet repertoire. Symphonic in its emotional and dramatic capacity, the fantasy carries the listener into Schubert’s tranquill musical atmosphere, where joy and melancholy are mysteriously intertwined.
