The Finale of III Big Band Composition Contest for Baltic Young Composers

Continuing the tradition started by the Latvian Radio Big Band and the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, the Big Band Composition Contest for Baltic Young Composers is happening this autumn for the third year in a row, inviting young composers to create new works for a jazz orchestra with a soloist. This time, the competition is highlighting the trumpet or the flugelhorn with the soloist being the LRBB member Dominykas Vyšniauskas (Lithuania). The finale concert of this year will feature the works of four young composers: Karolis Šarkus (Lithuania), Santa Kauliņa (Latvia), Anna Wibe-Gorkuša (Latvia) and Karlīna Priedēna (Latvia)
Alongside the young composers’ works, the concert will also feature fragments from three of the most recent Latvian Radio Big Band projects - conductor and arranger Michael Abene’s interpretations of Sting’s melodies, John Beasley’s arrangements of Charlie Parker’s legendary theme Donna Lee which earned John Beasley a Grammy for the best arrangement in 2021, as well as the most recent LRBB project - the Swedish composer and arranger Mats Holmquist’s versions of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s most popular bossa nova themes.
