Raimonds Pauls. Songs without Lyrics

A new program from Maestro Raimonds Pauls is always a significant event for Latvia. That applies to the world of jazz as well. Pauls himself admits that this genre is the great love of his life. The orchestral jazz program Songs without Lyrics is comprised of beloved melodies by Raimonds Pauls arranged by internationally acclaimed British composer Callum Au, which breathes new life into the evergreen repertoire.
The program will include some of Pauls’ greatest hits: songs from the musical ‘Māsa Kerija’, first triumphantly presented at the Rīga Operetta Theater in 1979; a cornerstone of legend Viktors Lapčenoks’ creative career, the dramatic ‘Elēģija’; the somber ballad ‘Dāvāja Māriņa’; the laureate of the Latvian Radio contest Mikrofons 1976, a favorite of the listeners, ‘Mēmā dziesma’. All of these songs, and more, will be performed in a brand new sound.
Callum Au is one of the leading British music producers and arrangers who has collaborated with grands of world jazz and soul music like Quincy Jones and Michael Bublé, and he has created the new interpretations of Pauls’ melodies for a truly impressive group of musicians. The Maestro himself will be joined on stage by Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga with conductor Normunds Šnē, and Pauls’ long-time collaborator Māris Briežkalns behind the drums.
‘In the world of jazz, a musician is set apart by nuance, a small thing only this one person has. A detail that makes them different from thousands of others and gives them vast possibilities for interpretation. You are born with it. It’s THE touch.’
